Radio Future

These demos come from four shows that currently air on Carleton College’s radio station, KRLX. Here they are remade in a way that could better utilize technologies that currently exist and could increase in popularity in years to come.

Demo 1

The Talk Show

Currently, radio stations are able to capitalize on the Internet by simulcasting their terrestrial broadcasts online. Talk shows, which started to decline in popularity in the late 90’s, are having a minor renaissance thanks to the Internet and podcasting. This demo shows how a show that currently streams online, could integrate video into its streaming capabilities in the near future. Watch the video by clicking on the picture. Then afterwards, read the written explanation.

The Call-in Show

The call-in talk show was a major phenomenon in the late 80’s and early 90’s, whose popularity was helped in part by the rise of cell phones. Now that more and more people are using the Internet as a means of communication, it seems only reasonable to explore the possibilites this offers the talk show. In this demo, you’ll see the main host of a talk show on KRLX in one screen, and in another screen will be a listener who contributes to the show not through the phone but via “video chatting.” See the results by clicking the picture below.

Demo 3

The Music Show

The most popular show on KRLX is the tried and true classic, the music show. At least 22 hours a day our programming consists of students coming down to the station and playing their favorite records for an hour. One of the hardest parts of updating this classic format for the Internet age is getting around music copyright when podcasting these shows. In a music show of the future, where live streaming video could be a more common occurrence, this demo takes the legal responsibility out of KRLX’s hands and places it with a third party, YouTube. Watch it, then read about it.

Demo 4

The News Show

KRLX currently hosts a five minute news segment produced by a different member of the news staff every weekday. The piece is played on the hour during the day, and is available for download as a podcast. These particular news segments don’t necessarily engage the community because they don’t directly involve them. Since it’s hard for a one-man news segment to do this type of piece successfully, this demo tries to utilize the production capabilities that listeners and members of the community possess, in hopes of creating a service for the public by distributing pieces created by the public.
